Course overview

Take your passion for the outdoors to new heights!

The HND Adventure Sports Coaching and Development at Glasgow Kelvin College is designed for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to turn that passion into a career. Whether it’s kayaking through white water, climbing crags, or leading mountain expeditions, this course gives you the skills, qualifications, and confidence to work in the adventure sports industry.

Adventure sports coaching is one of the UK’s fastest-growing areas of sport. You’ll gain an industry-recognised PDA in Sports Coaching, jointly certificated with sportscotland and CIMSPA, enhancing both your credentials and employability.

Learning takes place across a mix of venues — our Springburn Campus, Pinkston Watersports Centre, and a variety of off-campus locations in Scotland and Europe. You’ll develop hands-on experience in activities such as paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing, hill walking, skiing, and snowboarding.

This course is about more than learning — it’s about experiencing, coaching, and leading. With opportunities to gain National Governing Body (NGB) awards and complete a mandatory work placement, you’ll graduate with the qualifications and experience to launch your outdoor coaching career.

A PVG check is required before beginning your placement.

Video Transcript – Sarah: HND Adventure Sports Coaching & Development

Hi I'm Sarah and I do the outdoor adventure course.

Today we're going to be skiing. It's really good because we get to try skiing before we go to France.

When you're skiing you work on your like pizza and like carving so when you like want to slow down you put your skis closer together at the front.

When you're carving it's like skis are closer together and you like tilt your hips and try and keep your body as straight as possible.

Right you can come up the slope with me.

Oh no I'm gonna miss one.

Right on we go up to the top. I'm going. Bye guys.

And turn. Up. And turn. Up. Don't hit Adam

Snowboarders spend half their time on the floor.

That was fun.

Video Transcript – Unnamed Students: HND Adventure Sports Coaching & Development

Student 1: Growing up I always wanted to go travelling and doing the outdoor course helped me do that because I got qualifications to earn jobs in these places.

Student 2: When I was at the college we spent a lot of time at Pinkerston Watersports and so it kind of set you up really nicely for working here as well.

There's also lots of other companies that kind of work here so it creates ties with them as well.

Student 3: Absolutely go for it. I was pretty young when I went to college. I was 16 and it was the best thing I've done.

I actually wish I left school earlier and done another year at college because I think I would have got a lot more out of the college course.

Student 2: I agree with that.

Student 4: So much of the learning is having fun and pushing yourself to try new things.

You might not always be in your comfort zone but it's a good thing.
